Nestled like jewels in the sunlit embrace of the Caribbean Sea, the ABC Islands – Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao – beckon travelers with promises of unspoiled beauty and vibrant cultures. In this blog post, I embark on a virtual odyssey to unveil the common facts that define the allure of these Caribbean gems. From the arid landscapes of Aruba to the underwater wonders surrounding Bonaire and the colorful tapestry of culture in Curaçao, each island unfolds its unique story.
Join me as I delve into the details that make the ABC Islands a trifecta of Caribbean allure, offering a rich blend of natural wonders, marine treasures, and warm hospitality. Whether you're a seasoned Caribbean enthusiast or a curious traveler planning your escape to these sun-kissed havens, let's navigate the common facts that make the ABC Islands an irresistible destination for all.
GETTING THERE: Travelers can get to the ABC Islands – Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao – by cruise ship (commonly departing from Fort Lauderdale, Port Everglades) or by plane. Those deciding to catch a flight, typically from Miami, should fly into Aruba Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA) and then fly via Divi Divi Air between the islands. It’s best to fly into Aruba, then to Curacao, and lastly, to Bonaire – so you can catch an international flight home straight from Bonaire International Airport (BON), also known as Flamingo International Airport.
There are no ferries between the islands, so Divi Divi is your best bet, although you can also travel between islands via chartered or private boat. Be sure to plan well in advance with your travel designer.
LANGUAGE: The official languages of the islands are Dutch and Papiamentu, a musical-like Creole language blended with hints of Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and English. In fact, English is “unofficially” their third language, so English-speaking visitors do not have to worry about too much of a language barrier.
CLIMATE: Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao lie just outside of the hurricane belt providing lots of sun and glorious beach weather most of the year. Temperature highs usually stay in the upper 80s and sometimes, lows may drop into the mid-70s, with little rainfall. High seasons are during summer break and Christmas, so visiting in the fall or spring tends to be an ideal time to enjoy the lands without the hassle of large tourist crowds.
MONEY/CURRENCY (CREDIT CARDS, DEBIT CARDS, TIPPING, ATMS):
ARUBA: Aruba’s currency is the Aruban Florin (AFL/AWG) and the U.S. dollar (USD) is also widely accepted. Banks have money exchangers, and ATMs usually dispense cash in the local currency. Some ATMs also dispense American cash, so plan accordingly. Traveler’s checks are accepted in some establishments, and major credits cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express) are accepted most places. Tipping is appreciated but not required and usually ranges from 15-20%.
BONAIRE: While American Express and Discover are not as easy to use, Mastercard, Visa, or Maestro (debit) cards are generally accepted in Bonaire – where the American dollar (USD) is the main currency. ATMs can be found in many places throughout the island, and tipping is discretionary. Should one decide to tip, 15-20% is still standard. Since tipping is not obligatory in the Netherlands, it is often the same in Bonaire. It is best to leave cash for your tips, as some places will not add additional charges to your credit card receipts.
CURAÇAO: Curaçao’s currency is the Netherlands Antilles Guilder (ANG), but the U.S. dollar is accepted widely. Traveler's checks and most major credit cards are commonly recognized, but smaller establishments may require cash and insist on local currency – so it is best to always carry enough cash. Note that many gas stations will not accept credit cards, so again, cash is king. Tipping is up to you. Drivers are usually tipped 10% while waiters are tipped 5-10%. Bankomaticos, or ATMs, can be found at banks, the airport, cruise ship docks, grocery stores, and in other tourist areas. They accept international cards and dispense cash in either ANG or USD.
ELECTRICITY: Aruba uses type A, B and F power outlets and operates at a standard voltage of 127 V with 60 Hz, while both Bonaire and Curaçao also use A, B, and F sockets at 127/220 V with a 50 Hz standard frequency.
