Spring Break Close to Home

Updated: May 28

Spring break when I was younger meant one of two things. The carnival was coming to town for a fun-filled two weeks at home, or every other year or three years a trip to Walt Disney World. It was the usual thing and we never really

moved away from this plan, that’s how much we loved it. I do, from time to

time, look back and the travel agent/lover inside of me would beg for variety,

even if we stayed within the US! Here are some closer to home spring break

ideas to spice up your mix. Some might be old favorites; others might be new!

1. The Beach

The usual standby. Think west coast of Florida including the panhandle, gulf area of Texas, islands of Hawaii or the famous sands of So. Cal. If you're feeling a little more adventurous and you don’t mind cooler weather, definitely consider the Pacific Northwest. Cannon Beach in Oregon is becoming increasingly popular thanks to its landscapes, quaint towns and ability to cater to budgets of all ranges. And it’s something a little different!

2. Theme Parks

You know where I’m going with this. Orlando. You can’t get much better, am I right? Mouse fans - check. Movie buffs - check, sea life lovers - check. Throw another in the mix with a drive to the Tampa area. If you’ve been here and done that, venture out to Dollywood, Branson or California for Disneyland, Universal and Knotts.

3. National Parks

Looking for a little more activity, nature and history? Hit the road and see the best sights that the country has to offer. Head out west for some of the most popular – Arches, Zion, Grand Canyon, Bryce, etc. Head up a little bit north for Yellowstone, Grand Teton and Glacier. Hug the California coast on the PCH or venture inland to its mountain loop (includes Yosemite). There are a bunch more, but these are some of the most popular.

4. Spring Training

Are you or one of your littles a baseball fan? Do you come from an area where you’d do anything for your MLB team? Sports history buff? Consider heading down to Florida for Grapefruit League of Arizona for Cactus League. Stadiums where practices are held and games played are usually concentrated in a specific area and easy to travel between, so catch a bunch! The sights and sounds of your hometown field on a much smaller, even up close and personal scale!

5. Skiing

Might not be the best sounding idea, unless you’re a snow worshiper

and are wanting to take advantage of every last minute before the end of the season. New England ski areas might be winding down or closed, so if that’s the case or there’s no availability, head out west to take your last runs in Park City, Breckenridge, Vail, Aspen, etc. Maybe you’ll catch a few rays through the clouds. A sign of spring!
