Answers:

1. A closed loop sailing is an itinerary that begins and ends at the

same port. On these sailings, passengers can sail with a government issued birth certificate and photo idea however there are more subtleties to it than this. For exact information, check out your cruise lines’ travel documentation information.

2. Ships do not have dentists. However, they do have doctors and morgues. Things that make you go "hmmm ..."

3. You will find people getting on the ship at the gangway. It is literally a ramp connecting the ship to the port. Be sure you don’t confuse it with walking the plank.

4. Due to superstitions, the 13th floor is missing on most cruise ships. Funny enough, MSC doesn’t have a 17th floor due to Italian superstitions.

5. For the most part, door decorations are a way to identify your room in a sea of hallways and to celebrate special occasions. However, there is one decoration of which you need to be aware... the upside-down pineapple. If you’re not sure what they mean, you’ll need to Google it. If you know, give yourself an extra point.

6. American rapper Pitbull became the first male “godfather” when he christened the Norwegian Escape in 2015.

7. Far and away, Florida has the most people (passengers and crew) going through their ports. In fact, they accounted for 47% of all cruisers in 2019. California is a distant second.

8. Each of the five ships in Disney’s fleet (Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Wish) all play the first notes of “When You Wish Upon a Star” from their horns.

9. On Royal Caribbean Freedom Class ships, there is an obstructed view cabin above the Ben and Jerry’s ice cream store. The obstruction is caused by two cows that face the promenade, leaving their behinds facing the cabin. To ensure the passengers who are in this room don’t feel slighted and want to “moooove," they get extra perks like free ice cream every day.

10. As of January 2022, the largest and longest cruise ship is Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas. It is 1,188-foot-long, 210-foot-wide, and weighs in at a whopping 236,857 gross tons. Her maximum cruising speed is 22 knots, and she can carry up to 6,988 guests and 2,300 crew members.

How did you do?

9-10 points- Cruise Captain. There’s nothing but blue skies and smooth sailing for you. In fact, the next time you’re on a ship, head on up to the bridge and let them know you can take it from here.

6-8 points- First Mate. Not too shabby. Feel free to enjoy a walk around the lido deck with your favorite beverage.

3-5 points- Steward. There’s hope. Be sure to attend all the seminars at sea!

1-2 points- Rookie. Grab a mop because it’s time to swab the deck. Or better yet, let’s get you on a ship so you can get some first-hand experience.

I would love to know how you did! Let me know. And if you know some great cruise trivia, send that also. There may be a round two in the future!
